Marshall McLuhan -Understanding Media: The Extensions of Man (1964)

"The medium is the message."

McLuhan spent Understanding Media arguing that media (he treats "media" broadly — any tool, not just mass media) restructure the "ground" people operate on (perception, social organization, the pace and scale of life) rather than just delivering "content." That's exactly the move you make when you say AI's story isn't automation, it's environmental design.

McLuhan's thesis is that every tool extends some human faculty — the wheel extends the foot, the book extends the eye, electric media extend the nervous system. That's conceptually upstream of your "Cognitive elevation" idea and the broader Humanᴬᴵ claim that intelligence is amplified through tools rather than replaced by them.
